Preparing for Hemmavasan 2020 – county by county, race by race

Interest in training at home and cycling has reached record heights during the pandemic. With just one day until the first start, registrations are coming in for Vasaloppet's Hemmavasan 2020. There are right now over 14,000 people registered, in 20 different countries, to bike or run Hemmavasan on their home turf and in the virtual Vasaloppet Arena between August 15 and 22. There are eight races to choose from – all of which can be completed in the terrain and on the surface of your choice. Here we'll present some participation statistics from different counties plus celebrity participants and other other useful information for participants and those following along.

Races
The first historic Hemmavasan replaces Vasaloppet's Summer Week 2020, which would have run on location in the Vasaloppet Arena for the twelfth year in a row. The individual distances that would have been part of the Summer Week are available in Hemmavasan, plus the shorter 10 km Hemmavasan Cykel 10 for those who want to bike and Hemmavasan Trail 10 for those who want to walk, jog or run.

It's possible to register for one or more Hemmavasan races at a cost of 275 SEK per race. Registration is possible up until Saturday, August 22 at 09:00.

Time
Races can be completed at any time between Saturday, August 15 at 00:00 (Swedish time, meaning CET = Central European Time) up until Saturday, August 22 at midnight. In other words: Hemmavasan is open for 192 hours – but of course the race itself should be completed in one sequence without any longer interruptions.

The Hemmavasan Day
Saturday, August 15 is the big Hemmavasan day. Vasaloppet will be with you all day at Vasaloppet.TV. Hemmavasan Live starts its broadcast at 08:45 CET from a studio at the Vasaloppet finish in Mora, hosted by Johanna Ojala and Clara Henry. In the broadcast you can follow participants around the country and world, get live reports and preparation tips from our Kranskulla and Kransmas and other guests and experts. Several elite participants and celebrities will also broadcast their races live, among them Jenny and Susanna Kallur who are aiming for Vasaloppstrippeln 45 by participating in both Hemmavasan Cykel 45 and Hemmavasan Ultra 45. Read more on Hemmavasan Live below.

The App
The Hemmavasan concept is based on participants downloading the free app "Hemmavasan" in the App Store or Google Play and completing their race no matter where in the world they may be; on their favourite forest paths, the streets in town, along small beachside roads or on the local exercise trail. Via the app participants will get from the start in Sälen or Oxberg, through the classic checkpoints and down to the finish line portal in Mora in the virtual Vasaloppet Arena. Supporters and those interested can also follow participants directly via the app and see where they're at and how far they've come in their race. The app will download in Swedish or English, depending on the language settings of the phone. (Those who cannot use the app will be able to register their race manually after the fact.)

Those who registered early have received their unique and colourful Hemmavasan T-shirt from Craft; a T-shirt that you can complete your race in.

Vasaloppstrippeln
We're giving some extra consideration to those completing two races in Hemmavasan 2020. Completing a race of 90, 45 or 30 km is an achievement. How about three races in one calendar year? Ski, bike and run! This year the terms of Vasaloppstrippeln are somewhat adjusted since the Vasaloppet Summer Week isn't held on location in the Vasaloppet Arena.

This past winter there were 21,648 participants who skied 90 km (in Vasaloppet, Öppet Spår Sunday, Öppet Spår Monday or Nattvasan 90), 3,716 who skied 45 km (in Vasaloppet 45 or Nattvasan 45) and 9,601 who skied 30 km (in Vasaloppet 30 or Tjejvasan).

All these 34,965 people who completed a skiing race this year now have a unique opportunity to complete Vasaloppstrippeln with cycling and running in Hemmavasan 2020. (But you can also choose to count your 2020 ski race as part of Vasaloppstrippeln 2021.)

Right now there are 185 participants registered to complete Vasaloppstrippeln 90 this year, 161 aiming for Vasaloppstrippeln 45 and 219 for Vasaloppstrippeln 30.

Hemmavasan Live on Saturday, August 15 at 08.45–18.00 – live broadcast at Vasaloppet.TV.
Sporting Sweden's most jam-packed TV broadcast, summer 2020 – a whole nine hours live from the studio at the Vasaloppet finish line in Mora with guests and live features from Hemmavasan throughout Sweden and internationally. Hosts for the day are Johanna Ojala and Clara Henry.

Jenny and Susanna Kallur are reporting from Falun, Hans Olsson from Åre and Anders Ekh from Gothenburg. Participants will be called to tell how their race on home turf is going. There will be historical deep dives, anecdotes, training tips and weather forecasts. Throughout the day we'll also see features about the classic Vasaloppet checkpoints between Sälen and Mora. Everything can be viewed after the fact at vasaloppet.tv.

Guests in the studio include cycling expert Roberto Vacchi, ultrarunning enthusiast Johnny Hällneby, Vasaloppet's acting CEO Johan Eriksson Kranskulla Fanny Axelsson and Kransmas Daniel Duhlbo. Also appearing in the broadcast are Olympic skating gold medallist Tomas Gustafson, Cykelvasan victor 2019 Emil Lindgren, Vasaloppet meteorologist Pia Hultgren, record holder in Ultravasan 90 Jonas Buud, and many others!
