Jubileumsvasan 2022 broadcast live at Vasaloppet.TV
Wooden skis are tarred, shoemakers hired to make bindings, military surplus stocks searched for clothes while woollen hats are knitted and wool trousers sewn. The 139 Jubileumsvasan participants have now sent in documentation of their equipment for the re-creation of the first Vasaloppet, which starts the celebration of the Vasaloppet's 100th anniversary. It can now be announced that this unique race will be broadcast live on Vasaloppet's own streaming platform, Vasaloppet.TV.
On Saturday, February 12, 2022 we will ski in the Vasaloppet Arena like it's 1922. A total of 139 participants will start on wooden skis at Olnispagården in Sälen and ski down to the finish in Mora on packed snow. Skiers will top up on energy at the three official checkpoints in the form of bread, eggs, milk and blueberry soup.
"The participants have been really dedicated in gathering the right equipment. Some are already finished while others are making various parts, skis or clothes, and others are still looking for shoes in the right size, for example. It's been so fun to see their photos and preparations and it's become clear that this will be a spectacular race for both participants and spectators," says Mats Rylander, project manager for Vasaloppet's 100th anniversary.
139 participants are selected for Jubileumsvasan. The start list has updated slightly in that some have been unable to participate and others have taken their places. Among those selected we find descendants of both the first Vasaloppet winner, Ernst Alm from Norsjö, and Vasaloppet's originator, Anders Pers, as well as multiple previous Vasaloppet winners like Daniel Tynell, Sofia Lind and Oskar Svärd.
Training is in full swing and everyone can follow participant preparations, ask questions and offer tips and ideas in the public Facebook group Jubileumsvasan 2022. Jubileumsvasan 2022 | Facebook
"It's great to see that this race has already created such engagement. That's why it also feels so good to announce that Jubileumsvasan will be broadcast live at Vasaloppet.TV for viewers all over the world to follow this historic event. Of course, we also hope that many will come to watch on location, preferably in time-appropriate clothing. Later on, we'll be able to share information about the route and where spectators might best be able to cheer and support the skiers on location," says Mats Rylander.
