Pressmeddelande -

Ahead of Ultravasan, Trailvasan, Funkisvasan and Vasastafetten 2024

On Friday, August 16, and Saturday, August 17, over 6,100 runners are registered to participate in a running race in the Vasaloppet Arena, as Vasaloppet's Summer Week 2024 concludes with six different running events. Both elite athletes and recreational runners from 31 different nations and all 21 counties of Sweden are signed up to take part in the five individual races and the Vasastafetten relay. Many of the individual runners are also hoping to complete Vasaloppstrippeln, having previously skied and cycled the same distance earlier this year. Here, we present facts, favourites, statistics, and trivia ahead of Saturday's races.

Registration is still open at vasaloppet.se until Thursday, August 15. Direct registration on location (with a slightly higher fee) opens on Friday, August 16, at 10:00 at the race office in Mora and at 12:00 at the race office in Sälen. On race day, you can register at the start location.

Friday
On Friday afternoon at 14:00, the events kick off with Funkisvasan, starting and finishing at the Vasaloppet finish line in Mora. This is a new 4 km recreational race aimed at individuals with disabilities.

At 17:15, Swedish astronaut Marcus Wandt will hand over the Vasaloppet number bib and medal, which accompanied him on his space journey to the ISS in January this year, to the Vasaloppet Kranskulla and Kransmas, and CEO Johan Eriksson.

At 18:00, it's time for Trailvasan 10, a 10 km recreational race, starting and finishing at the Vasaloppet finish line.

In addition to the above races, the children's running event "Barnens Vasalopp Löpning" will take place on Friday, August 16, in Mora (at 16:30) and in Sälen (at 18:00) for those up to around 10 years old. It's a fun and challenging course where the children can experience movement and joy.

Saturday
On Saturday, August 17, Ultravasan 90, Ultravasan 45, Trailvasan 30, and Vasastafetten will follow. A total of nine classes (eight of which are competition classes) will run on Saturday:

- Ultravasan 90: 92 km. Start in Sälen at 05:00.
Ultravasan 90 km starts in Sälen, following the traditional Vasaloppet course eastwards towards Mora. Two classes: Women and Men.

- Ultravasan 45: 45 km. Start in Oxberg at 09:00.
Ultravasan 45 km starts in Oxberg, following the winter route of Vasaloppet 45 along the Oxberg lake towards Vasslan, before joining the Ultravasan 90 course. Two classes: Women and Men.

- Trailvasan 30: 30 km. Start in Oxberg at 11:30.
Trailvasan 30 km starts in Oxberg, taking forest roads and paths to Mora, passing through traditional Swedish summer farms and spruce forests via the checkpoints in Oxberg, Hökberg, and Eldris. Two classes: Women and Men.

- Vasastafetten: Running relay for ten-person teams. Start in Sälen at 08:00.
92 km from Sälen to Mora, divided into ten stages ranging from 4.5 to 15 km. (Vasastafetten has three classes: Women, Men, and Leisure. In the women’s and men’s classes, teams compete for prize money. Men = Women are allowed. Women = Only women. Leisure = Any number of women and men. In the leisure class, a participant may take on multiple sections.)

This year’s course
In 2023, the course for runners was modified directly after the start in Sälen, extending Ultravasan and Vasastafetten from 90 km to 92 km. The route is largely the same as last year, with some alterations: After the first hill, at the highest point, participants in Ultravasan 90 and Vasastafetten continue for about a kilometre on the Cykelvasan route before moving onto forest paths instead of going immediately onto a narrow forest path as last year, which caused queues. Also, between Evertsberg and Oxberg, about 9 km before the Oxberg checkpoint, the track has been rerouted due to the reconstruction of Vasaloppsvägen. This year, participants in Ultravasan 90, Vasastafetten, and Ultravasan 45 will not pass the Axi mill but instead follow the Cykelvasan route towards Björnarvet and onwards to the Oxberg checkpoint. The re-routing at the Axi mill is a temporary solution this year due to roadworks; besides this, only minor changes have been made to the running route.

More information about routes and surfaces can be found at:
https://www.vasaloppet.se/en/races/running-races/vasastafetten/about/during/#courseinformation

"Ultra" denotes races longer than the marathon distance of 42,195 metres, and "trail" or "terrain" signifies that most of the race takes place on surfaces other than asphalt.

Breakfast Run – warm-up for Ultravasan and Trailvasan 2024
On Friday, August 16, from 08:00 to 10:00, Vasaloppet invites you to a joint Breakfast Run in the Vasaloppet Arena, along with a pre-race discussion with elite runners ahead of Ultravasan and Trailvasan, taking place in Tingshusparken, near the finish area in Mora. This guided group run covers 5–6 kilometres along the Vasaloppet Arena, with both elite and recreational runners participating. There are four different pace groups, ranging from 5:30 to 7 minutes per kilometre, with two of the groups led by this year’s Kranskulla and Kransmas. After the run, a simple breakfast will be served, with "Jesus and Manne" from the popular running podcast Spring Snyggt. The event is open to all who want to join.

Interviews with runners and notable figures will start around 09:00. The media are warmly welcomed to attend, photograph, and interview participants!

Comments
Ultramarathon runner and expert commentator for Saturday's live broadcast of Ultravasan and Trailvasan on Vasaloppet.TV, Johnny Hällneby, shared his thoughts on this year’s Ultravasan field:

"In the women’s category of Ultravasan 90 km, world star Dominika Stelmach is returning, and she will be very difficult to beat. In 2021, she finished second after an aggressive race against the queen of Ultravasan 90, Alexandra Morozova. Although Swedish runner Sophia Sundberg is also of high international calibre, she’ll likely have to set her sights on a second consecutive second place. It’s also exciting that marathon champion Isabellah Andersson is returning to tackle Ultravasan 90 after her first attempt in 2016 when she had to withdraw halfway through the race.

On the men’s side, the Swedish runners are currently world-class in this type of race and while Rajpaul Pannu from the USA is also a top contender, he might very well be outpaced by 4–5 Swedish runners in this year’s Ultravasan 90. Norway’s Didrik Hermansson is another strong competitor, although it’s been a few years since he was last in the mix. The man to beat at the top is unbeatable Olle Meijer, who recently set a new Swedish record for 100 km, taking the title from Jonas Buud. It’s not out of the question that Olle is also eyeing Jonas Buud’s record in Ultravasan 90, the incredible time of 5:45:08.

In Ultravasan 45, we also have an exciting line-up on the men’s side with Elov Olsson and Jonas Buud on the start list. Both have impressive victories over the double distance to their names. However, last year’s winner Jesper Lundberg should be able to snatch another victory, as former winner Kristofer Låås has had to withdraw due to a cold. Among the women, last year’s winner Erica Lech makes for another interesting start, though previous winner Liselotte Hellsten has also fallen ill.

As usual, it’s the sheer breadth of participants and the festive atmosphere that stand out during the Ultravasan weekend. Over 1,500 people will take on this historic route between Sälen and Mora, hopefully returning home with a medal, memories, and an achievement for life!"
