Ahead of Cykelvasan 90 2024

From August 5–11, the Vasaloppet Bike Festival will take place in Sälen, culminating in Cykelvasan 90 2024 from Sälen to Mora on Saturday, August 10. Sweden’s national broadcaster, SVT, will live broadcast this prestigious event, which caters to both elite and recreational cyclists, on SVT1 and SVT Play from 07:20 to 11:30. The race will also be broadcast live in Denmark, Finland, and Norway. The elite women start at 07:30 and the elite men at 08:15. Recreational cyclists will be covered throughout the day at Vasaloppet.TV. Here are all the conditions ahead of Cykelvasan 2024!

Last winter saw the 100th Vasaloppet. While Cykelvasan isn't as old, this year marks its 16th edition. The first race occurred in 2009, coinciding with the start of Vasaloppet’s Summer Week. This year, the 200,000th cyclist will cross the finish line in one of the Cykelvasan races. 36 cyclists have participated every Cykelvasan 90 for 15 years (including Hemmavasan), and are registered again this year.

Kicking off the event is Cykelvasasprinten 2024 on Thursday, August 8, at 16:00 – an exhibition race at Valleberget near Experiumtorget, Lindvallen. It promises speed and excitement as the Nordic elite compete for a 20,000 SEK prize in a team competition.

The summer week continues with running events on August 16–17, including the individual races Funkisvasan, Trailvasan 10, Trailvasan 30, Ultravasan 45, Ultravasan 90, and the relay race Vasastafetten. A Barnens Vasalopp children's running event is also organized.

Hemmavasan cykel 2024
Hemmavasan complements Vasaloppet’s Summer Week 2024. During the same period as the main events from August 9 to 17, participants can join recreational cycling and running races at any location worldwide via the digital Vasaloppet Arena.

Cykelvasan’s various 2024 races have participants from 32 different nations, including Sweden. The largest international contingents are from Norway, Finland, Germany, Denmark, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, France, and Switzerland.

Participants in Cykelvasan 2024 range from 7 to 85 years old! The average age is 44.2 years. (Statistics as of Tuesday, August 6, 2024.)

CYKELVASAN 90 SATURDAY, AUGUST 10, 2024
Cykelvasan 90 starts at the Vasaloppet start in Sälen and passes all the classic Vasaloppet checkpoints. The total distance is 96 km on forest roads and wooden decking over marshlands, through bright pine forests, past idyllic summer farms and meadows, ending at the finish portal in Mora (91 km forest/gravel roads and 5 km asphalt). Elite women start at 07:30 and elite men at 08:15, while leisure class start groups set off every five minutes from 08:30. Separate start groups for women are available in the leisure class for those who wish.

The Elite – who will win in 2024?
In 2023, Amanda Bohlin and Kristian Klevgård won without much drama in a wet and muddy race. Bohlin pulled ahead just after Evertsberg and maintained her lead, winning by nearly a minute in her Cykelvasan debut. Norway’s Klevgård claimed his second victory, pulling ahead just before Oxberg and winning by over three minutes. He remarked afterwards that he “really loved Cykelvasan,” raising the question of whether Klevgård will become the first male winner to achieve THREE victories. Emil Lindgren, also a two-time winner, has retired and will be an expert commentator for SVT’s broadcast. (Two-time winner Jesper Dahlström, who was 21st in 2023, is also registered.)

Men
Matthias Wengelin, who won the first Cykelvasan in 2009 and finished sixth in 2023, has won five out of five races in the Långloppscupen long-distance cup so far this year. Two races remain (Bockstensturen and Stenbocksturen). If Wengelin is considered a veteran, the second place in Långloppscupen is currently held by the younger 20-year-old Filip Mård, who finished 12th in Cykelvasan last year. The best Swede in 2023 was Hugo Forsell, who finished third, followed by Carl Kagevi in seventh. Will one of these men be the best Swede again in 2024?

There are many names in the mix this year. Last year, five cyclists from Sweden and five from Norway made up the top 10 in the men’s class. All five Norwegians return this year: In addition to first place Klevgård, there's second place Østen Brovold Midtsundstad, fifth place Tormod Weydahl, sixth place Eskil Evensen Lie and ninth place Vidar Mehl. Also Martin Røste Omdahl who was third in 2022.

From Finland, among others, comes this year’s Finnish XCM champion, Toni Tähti. From Denmark, 22-year-old Oliver Vedersø Sølvhøj, who was third in the Danish XCO/XCC championships this year, and has also won the junior European Championship. Simon Andreassen participated as the only Dane in the mountain bike race at the Olympics in Paris and finished 12th. Earlier in the season, he won a European Championship silver medal and a World Cup victory. Now, he will make his debut in Cykelvasan.

Does anyone dare try to predict the men's class winner in Cykelvasan 90 this year?

Ladies
Amanda Bohlin has two wins in Långloppscupen so far this year. Clara Lundmark, who came second in Cykelvasan 2023, has won one Långloppscupen race this year. Last year’s fifth place, Nathalie Eklund, is registered, as well as sixth place Nellie Larsson, seventh place Terese Andersson, eighth place Tilda Hylén, and tenth place Karin Söderqvist. Also returning are Linn Gustafzzon, who hasn't raced in Cykelvasan since 2021, and Sandra Salinger, who won in 2022.

Two days before the start, Jenny Rissveds also announced that she will participate in Cykelvasan 90 on Saturday. Jenny Rissveds, Olympic champion from Rio 2016 and recently a bronze medallist at the Paris Olympics, has previously participated in Cykelvasan four times, most recently in 2015, with a seventh place in 2014 as her best result.

The Swedish competitors will face very tough opposition this year. Lejla Njemčević from Bosnia & Herzegovina was fourth at the 2023 Marathon World Championships, won the overall World Cup, and was ranked world number one.

Norway’s Hildegunn Gjertrud Hovdenak, who came third last year and has consistently been on the podium at Cykelvasan over the years, will not start. However, her compatriot Elisabeth Sveum, who won in 2019, is registered.

Sanni Tuukkanen and Aino Teronen are two Finnish juniors registered for Cykelvasan 90.

New course layout at the start this year
The Vasaloppet Arena is in good condition, and for participants in Cykelvasan Öppet Spår and Cykelvasan 90, this year marks the premiere of the new course layout at the start in Sälen. (The plan was to use it last year, but the storm Hans caused flooding, so the initial stretch had to be rerouted.) Now, cyclists will ride one kilometre along the riverbank by Västerdalälven to the road crossing where they will encounter the famous first hill. Besides that, the course layout for participants in Cykelvasan remains largely the same as before, with a few minor changes. For example, near the Evertsberg lakes, the course has been slightly rerouted due to ongoing construction on the Vasaloppsvägen road.

At the start in Sälen, a so-called master start will be applied. This means that an ATV will guide participants at a limited speed from the start area to the road crossing before the first hill. During this stretch, all cyclists must maintain their position in the line and not pass the ATV.

The 100th Kranskulla and 36th Kransmas
This year’s Kranskulla is Elsa Hermansson (Kranskulla no. 100), and the Kransmas is Gustav Johnsson (Kransmas no. 36), both are elite ski orienteers from IFK Mora.

Awards Ceremony
Sprint prizes (3,000 SEK) are awarded to the first cyclist in the women's and men's classes to pass the highest point of Vasaloppet, after the first uphill slope, as well as the checkpoints in Smågan, Mångsbodarna, Risberg, Oxberg, Hökberg, and Eldris. A hill prize (5,000 SEK) is awarded to the first woman and man to reach Evertsberg. To receive the sprint and hill prizes, participants must complete the race. Garlands to the winners and placement medals to the top three. Training scholarships to the top ten women and top ten men in the competition class. The 2024 first prize in both the women's and men's classes is 40,000 SEK. The total prize sum is 288,000 SEK. The awards ceremony takes place in the finish area in Mora at 13:00. (A flower ceremony for the top 3 will take place immediately after finishing.)

Most wins and top 3 placements
20 cyclists have taken home the Cykelvasan victories since the start in 2009. Jennie Stenerhag has won five times, Hildegunn Gjertrud Hovdenak twice, Jesper Dahlström twice, Emil Lindgren twice, and Kristian Klevgård twice.

The men's class only saw Swedish victories up until 2021 when Norwegian Kristian Klevgård won. In the women's class there have been four foreign wins (Norwegian and Finnish).

Jennie Stenerhag has been in the top 3 eight times; as for the men, Emil Lindgren has seven top 3 spots.

Emil Lindgren can brag that he's been in the top 10 more than anyone: eleven times, to be exact! Matthias Wengelin has been in the top 10 ten times. On the women's side, Jennie Stenerhag has been in the top 10 ten times and Hildegunn Gjertrud Hovdenak and Nellie Larsson nine times each, with Hanna Bergman managing eight.

FACTS Cykelvasan's development year by year
2009: The first ever Cykelvasan 30, Cykelvasan 45 and Cykelvasan 90. The terms "Vasaloppet Winter Week" and "Vasaloppet Summer Week" are coined. With near 2,000 participants, Cykelvasan immediately becomes Sweden's biggest mountain bike race.
2010: Cykelvasasprinten ran for the first time in Lindvallen. Barnens Vasalopp Cykel (originally called Barnens Cykelvasa) for young children has also been arranged since 2010.
2011: The start in Sälen moves from Tjärnhedens IP to the Vasaloppet start in Berga by.
2012: Ungdomscykelvasan starts, a competition for youths aged 11–16 (run on the same course as Cykelvasan 30).
2015: Cykelvasan Öppet Spår is introduced, based on the winter version of Öppet Spår.
2016: First time the women's class start in Cykelvasan 90 takes place before the men's class start (previously there was a joint start).
2017: First year the race runs completely off roads with traffic.
2018: Cykelvasan's races are distributed across three different days.
2020: Cykelvasan was part of Hemmavasan due to the pandemic.
2021: Cykelvasan 90 Elit ran while others could complete Hemmavasan Cykel.
2022: Recreational athletes back again. SVT live broadcast for the first time.
2023: The shorter races moved to Friday. New route at the start: the first uphill slope is now included, just like in winter. Ladies who wished could join their own start group in the leisure class.
2024: A cycle along the Västerdalälven river is introduced after the start in Sälen, before the first hill.

Official Police & Firefighter Swedish Championship in MTB Marathon 2024
In connection with Cykelvasan 90, the Swedish championship for police officers and firefighters will also take place. There are five classes for men and five for women, all starting together in the leisure class start group 7. The awards ceremony will be held at 14:30 at the Vasaloppet finish line.
