Vasaloppet ski trails between Sälen and Mora are now ready

Vasaloppet's Winter Week 2016 takes place February 26–March 6, with the 92nd Vasaloppet on March 6 as the obvious highlight. But already there are finished ski tracks drawn between Sälen and Mora. After snowfall, persistent cold and intensive work, the Vasaloppet course was, this past weekend, groomed and ready for exercising skiers.

Approximately 64,000 participants are, right now, registered for Vasaloppet's Winter Week 2016, making this the fifth year in a row that the Vasaloppet Winter Week has over 60,000 registered participants. Three races (Vasaloppet, Öppet Spår Sunday and Stafettvasan) are fully booked while Tjejvasan has only about 500 start positions remaining, and Öppet Spår Monday about 1,400. Kortvasan, Halvvasan and Ungdomsvasan are also open for registration.

Regarding the Vasaloppet course, the Sälen–Vasslan section has been packed and prepared using sledges while the rest of the trail was prepared with snowcats this past Friday night. The last 12 kilometres to Mora has a foundation of artificial snow while the rest consists of natural snow. There are, though, currently no tracks laid on the very final stretch between Mora Parken and the Zorn Museum. Vasaloppet's snow factory in Oxberg has so far this winter produced over 80,000 cubic metres of artificial snow, which is used continuously to strengthen the course as required.

The Halvvasan course around the Oxberg lake is also groomed and ready and, were it not for the severe cold, the seeding race Moraloppet (44 km) could have taken place as planned this past Saturday. The temperature of minus 28 degrees Celsius made the competition jury decide to cancel the race.
