Öppet Spår 9 km – a miniature Vasaloppet
The Winter Week of 2016 sees the premiere edition of the new race Öppet Spår 9 km. A smaller Vasaloppet experience where anyone can participate. The goal is that those who otherwise would not take part should have a chance to discover cross-country skiing.
The day before Vasaloppet, Saturday March 5, the very first Öppet Spår 9 km will run on the final nine kilometres of the Vasaloppet course from the Eldris checkpoint to the finish line in Mora. The race is aimed at those who are not yet skiers or who might not even practice any outdoors exercise. Participants could be supporters of skiers in other races, newly arrived citizens, or our own Vasaloppet functionaries, who never have time to participate in any of the other races.
"We want to open the door to skiing by removing all obstacles that might come with extensive preparation. It will be a new kind of Öppet Spår that is more about daring to try than it is about competition, giving everyone the chance to experience a traditional sport and cross the finish line under the classic Vasaloppet archway," says Vasaloppet Sport Manager Tommy Höglund.
Participation is free and for those without skis there is a limited supply of equipment available for borrowing, thanks to Vasaloppet's official partner Madshus. Vasaloppet offers a free bus trip from Mora to the start in Eldris and will construct a temporary fluid checkpoint in Hemus.
The registration is now open. This premiere race will have a maximum of 450 participants.
